What to know about motorcycle insurance in Halifax?

Summer has finally arrived in Halifax. You’ve bought the perfect motorcycle, and you’re ready to take it out for a spin. You’ve planned out your route and checked the weather forecast. You go through your mental checklist to make sure you’ve got everything you need:

  1. Helmet?
  2. Goggles?
  3. Protective clothing?
  4. Insurance?

If you own a car or any other kind of vehicle in Canada for that fact, you must have insurance for it. Before you can take your motorcycle out to explore Halifax and beyond, you must have insurance for all of the following:

  • Third-party liability
  • Uninsured motorist
  • Accident benefits

You can also buy additional insurance, such as:

  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Loss of use coverage
  • Personal effects coverage
  • Waiver of depreciation

At Archway Insurance, we’re here to tell you the 3 things you need to know about motorcycle insurance in Halifax.

  1. What’s mandatory
  2. What’s optional
  3. How Archway Insurance can help you find the perfect insurance policy

Mandatory Insurance

There are 3 main parts to the mandatory insurance for your motorcycle. You can increase or decrease the amount of coverage you select — beyond the required minimum — but you must always have this coverage.

  1. Third-party liability coverage

Third-party liability covers you for an accident you caused due to negligence. At Archway, we offer a minimum of $1 million worth of third-party liability, but you can increase that coverage if you want. It provides coverage if you injure or kill a person, or cause property damage.

It can help you cover a variety of costs, such as repairs to an automobile or a home you damaged. It can also cover costs from any lawsuits or legal fees that occur due to an accident you caused.

  2. Uninsured automobile coverage

You must also have uninsured automobile coverage. You must have this in case a car hits you, and it does not have insurance, or you are in a hit and run. Uninsured automobile coverage fills in the gap that the other driver’s insurance should have covered.

  3. Accident benefits

Accident benefits cover you in three main areas. If you have medical bills from the accident that go beyond what is covered by the government, accident benefits will help with those costs. If you are injured and require physiotherapy, or other kinds of therapy to help you get better, these costs are also covered by accident benefits. And finally, if you cannot work after your accident, accident benefits will replace some of your lost income.

These three parts of insurance are mandatory in Halifax.

Optional Insurance

On top of increasing your coverage for the mandatory sections of your insurance, you can purchase optional insurance to suit your particular needs and situation. These are some of the most popular kinds of optional insurance for motorcycles:

  1. Collision coverage

This can be used if you collide with another vehicle or even for an accident that does not involve another vehicle to fix damage to your bike – e.g. skidding off the road and into a ditch.

  2. Comprehensive coverage

This covers your bike for damage that is not sustained in a collision – e.g. hitting a wild animal such as a deer or a cracked windshield/plate, debris falls on your motorcycle, or it’s damaged when someone breaks into your garage.

  3. Loss of use coverage

If you have put in an insurance claim and cannot use your motorcycle because it is damaged, loss of use coverage will cover the cost of a rental car or while your vehicle is being repaired or replaced.

  4. Personal effects coverage

This will cover the cost of your belongings if they are damaged while on your motorcycle.

  5. Waiver of depreciation

You can be covered up to the original value of your bike if it’s damaged beyond repair.

You can also buy more kinds of optional insurance. The world of insurance can be overwhelming, which is why Archway Insurance is here to help.
